OUTSIDE COMPETITION
Big Ten Rule 17.02.9 states that all student-athletes must receive written approval from the athletics director prior to practicing or competing in outside competitions in their sport during the academic year. The NCAA and Big Ten define competition as a pre-scheduled game or tournament in any sport governed by the NCAA. Thus, a hockey player may not participate in a pond hockey tournament without permission, but could participate in a disc-golf tournament or a pickup basketball game at the YMCA (since it is not pre-arranged). The intent of this rule is to make sure that the athletic department is aware of all outside competitions that student-athletes are competing in to ensure no rules are broken and missed class time is kept to a minimum.
