Redshirts

We often receive questions from coaches and staff about how a student-athlete qualifies for a redshirt season.  A student-athlete may take a redshirt season if they do not participate in any competitions while representing the U of M.  A student-athlete may still travel with a team and qualify for a redshirt season.

Any competition against another team during the championship season in their sport, counts as a season of competition for the student-athlete (Bylaw 14.2.3.1).  Therefore if a student-athlete plays one minute of a competition against an alumni team they will have used one season of competition.

In the sports of basketball and soccer only, there are exceptions for 1st year student-athletes to participate in exhibition contests without using a season of competition (Bylaw 14.2.3.1.2).
