Minnesota sophomore Tijana Koprivica led the Gophers while taking the Flight B bracket title at the Wildcat Invitational over the weekend at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center in Evanston, Illinois.
After winning her opening match on Friday, Koprivica defeated Miljana Jocic of South Carolina in the quarters by a 6-1, 6-3 score before tallying a 7-5, 6-1 semifinal victory over William & Mary’s Barbara Zidek. In the final, Koprivica bested Big Ten rival Joanna Craven of Purdue by a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 score. The Gophers have now captured at least one singles title in each tournament on their fall schedule thus far.
Freshman Alessandra Ferrazzi also delivered a gutsy performance for the Gophers, taking the Flight A singles consolation bracket. Ferrazzi breezed through two Saturday consolation matches, posting straight sets victories over Nika Koukhartchouk of Ole Miss 6-1, 6-4 and Audrey Bordelau 6-2, 6-2. Trailing in her consolation final match on Sunday in the third set by a 6-5 score and down 0-40 in the game, Ferrazzi fended off three match points against Michigan State’s Manon Noe to capture a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory.
Senior Danielle Mousseau also had a solid weekend for the Gophers, winning her quarterfinal match over Soledad Podlipnik of Ole Miss 6-3, 6-3 before dropping her Flight C semifinal match.
Ferrazzi and junior Karina Chiarelli rallied to win two weekend matches, 8-4 over Wisconsin’s Jessica Seyforth and Elizabeth Carpenter and 8-5 over DePaul’s Beatrix Csordas and Gergana Ganeva, after dropping their Friday opener to reach the consolation final. The duo’s two losses this weekend were their only two losses of the 2007-08 campaign thus far.
After suffering a slow start on Friday, tallying a 3-10 aggregate record in singles and doubles action, the Gophers rallied to a 18-14 mark over the last two days of the tournament, including a 14-9 record in singles play.
“We are very encouraged with how we played this weekend, especially in singles matches,” Coach Tyler Thomson said. “This serves as a great springboard heading into the ITA Regional later this month.”
The Gophers are next in action October 18th to the 23rd at the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
