Gopher Swimming Concludes the Minnesota Grand Prix

The University of Minnesota women’s swim team concluded the Minnesota Grand Prix tonight, at the University Aquatic Center.

Yuen Kobayashi placed third overall with a time of 16:26.00 to lead the Gophers in the event. Chloe Sutton won the event in a time of 16:11.90 to win the event. Christine Jennings placed fifth overall in the same event with a time of 17:02.04, while Amy Funk finished eighth (17:32.68).

Minnesota dominated the 200 back event, placing five in the A Final. For the second straight day, Jenny Shaughnessy placed second overall in an event, this time in the 200 back. Shaughnessy clocked a time of 2:01.27, finishing behind Mary Descenza when she won the event in 1:57.29. Deidre DeWall clocked a third-place time of 2:01.65, while Emilia Nilsson earned a time of 2:03.37. Castina Wabeke finished seventh in the A Final (2:06.07), while Andrea Hanson rounded out the top eight (2:07.06). Minnesota had an additional three compete in the B Final. Erin Forster won the B final in a time of 2:03.53. Stephanie Hilstrom finished 15th (2:10.62) and was followed by Laura Wilcox in 16th overall (2:11.35).

Minnesota took the fifth-eighth spots in the 100 free. Kobayashi competed in her second event of the day when she finished fifth in a time of 51.83. Meredith McCarthy followed with a sixth-place finish (52.04) and Stacy Busack in seventh (52.23). Megan Radecke touched the wall in 52.44 to place eighth overall. Jillian Tyler held a time of 51.88 for 10th, while Alison Eggers was 13th in 52.59. Megan Braun and Erin Holtmeyer placed 15th and 16th overall with times of 54.56 and 54.72.

Molly Belk led the Gophers in the 200 butterfly when she placed fourth in 2:02.95. Alicia Jensen took sixth in 2:06.26, while Nilsson finished seventh in 2:06.26. Kayla Redig, Kait Strickland and Kelsey Ridder all competed in the B Final with times of 2:09.04, 2:09.76 and 2:09.83 to place 12th, 13th and 14th overall.

The Gophers concluded the Grand Prix taking the top two spots in the 400 free relay. Shaughnessy, Busack, Tyler and Roxane Akradi teamed together for a winning time of 3:27.29. The Gopher B relay of Jennings, Braun, Eggers, and Radecke combined for a time of 3:29.62.

Minnesota will take next weekend off to prepare for the Ohio State Invitational and to close out the first semester of competition. The OSU Invite will be held Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in Columbus, Ohio.
