Shaughnessy and Schroeder Sweep Big Ten Weekly Awards

The Big Ten Conference as announced that Jenny Shaughnessy earned Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, while Jacqueline Schroeder was named Big Ten Diver of the Week for their performance last weekend. Both competed at the University Aquatic Center last weekend in the Minnesota Grand Prix and the Minnesota Diving Invite.
For the second consecutive week, Shaughnessy earned swimmer of the week honors as she recorded one first-place finish and three runner-up finishes at the Minnesota Toyota Grand Prix. Her time in the 400-yard individual medley (4:21.03) met an NCAA B’ standard. Her second-place finish in the 400 IM came just behind United States Olympian Kaitlin Sandeno. The junior took part in the 400 freestyle relay, helping the quartet to a winning time of 3:27.29. Shaughnessy also performed well in the 200 backstroke (2:01.27) and 400 medley relay (3:47.15), touching the wall second in both. The Rochester, Minn., native garners her second career weekly laurel.
Schroeder outperformed the field at the Minnesota Diving Invitational last week notching two first-place finishes and also runner-up honors. Her first-place platform score of 279.30 just missed the Gopher school record by 0.1 points set in 2006 by Holly Jakits (279.40). Schroeder’s championship performance from the one-meter board tallied an NCAA B’ cut score of 271.75. Off the three-meter, the Edina, Minn., native sprung for a second-place score of 300.45 qualifying her for the NCAA Zone Diving competition in March. This is the sophomore’s first career weekly award.
Schroeder and the rest of the dvers will compete at the Indiana Invitational this weekend. The Gopher swimmers will have this week off to prepare for the Ohio State Invitational, Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in Columbus, Ohio.
