Student-Athlete Date Auction

11/16/2007 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

The University of Minnesota’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be hosting a Student-Athlete Date Auction as a fundraiser for St. Joseph’s Home For Children on Tuesday December 4th, 2007. The event will take place at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion attached to Williams Arena with doors opening 6:30pm. Entrance to the event will be limited to University of Minnesota students only and IDs will be verified upon entrance to the event. Tickets to attend the auction may be purchased in advance for $3 at Bierman Field and Athletic Building between Noon-3pm and 6-9pm from November 26 - 30 and on December 3, from SAAC members on campus or on the night of the event at the door for $5.

The Student-Athlete Date Auction will encompass 25 student-athletes being auctioned off for a group-style date to occur on Saturday, December 15th 2007 beginning at 6pm. The date will occur at the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum on the University of Minnesota Minneapolis campus and will include a catered dinner, a private museum showing, and an invitation to attend the semi-formal Student-Athlete Snow Ball to be held following the dinner. The group-style date was chosen to ensure student-athlete safety and students should not expect to participate in the date auction under the assumption of developing a long-term romantic relationship after the organized date.

At the Student-Athlete Date Auction on December 4th 2007, student-athletes will be auctioned off one by one in normal auction fashion. Winning bidders will be required pay their given price in cash immediately upon auction success. No checks or credit/debit cards will be accepted. Groups of students may pool their money and support around one bidder to help increase his or her overall purchasing power, however, only one designated member of the group will be allowed to attend the date. As stated, all profits from the Student-Athlete Date Auction will be donated to the Twin Cities chapter of St. Joseph’s Toys for Tots. The last Student-Athlete Date Auction held in 2005 raised $2188 for the American Red Cross’s efforts in response to Hurricane Katrina.

St. Joseph's Home for Children cares for children in need by addressing immediate needs for shelter and stability and offering long-term solutions to emotional and behavioral issues. A program of Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, St. Joe's specializes in assessment, crisis intervention and residential programming, especially for children with severe emotional and behavioral problems. St. Joe's serves children and their families from the Twin Cities area and beyond and provides central intake services for all Hennepin County children removed from their homes due to abuse or instability.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is a group comprised of 50 student-athletes that serves as a liaison between the student-athlete population, coaches and administration, the Big Ten Conference, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
