Western Carolina used an advantage at the free throw line to capture a 77-72 upset victory over No. 22/21 Louisville at the Subway Classic at Minnesota on Saturday. The Lady Catamounts, who finished the Classic with a 1-1 record, were led by Brooke Johnson’s 17 points.
Western Carolina (3-1) outscored Louisville (1-1) by a 19-13 margin from the line in the stat that was the difference maker. The Lady Catamounts also out-shot the Cardinals, 45.0 percent to 38.6 percent, by Louisville counted that with a 44-37 advantage on the boards.
All-American Angel McCoughtry led Louisville with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Minnesota will face Louisville in the Subway Classic finale on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Golden Gophers defeated Western Carolina, 70-67, on Friday.
