Golden Gopher Women's Gymnastics Announces Recruiting Class

University of Minnesota women’s gymnastics co-head coaches Jim and Meg Stephenson announced that two gymnasts will join the Golden Gopher program for the 2008-09 season. Lucy Ennis and Kylie Smith have signed National Letters of Intent, and will begin their freshman year in the fall of 2008.

“Lucy and Kylie come to Minnesota both meeting the highest expectations and criteria that the women’s gymnastics team aspires to. With top-level academic achievements and nationally-ranked athletic abilities, they both will impact our program’s success,” said Jim Stephenson. “We are equally excited by the character they display. Each is a model of integrity and ambition, and displays a commitment to excellence. Their sincerity and sense of humor promise to enrich us all.”

Lucy Ennis is in her senior year at Trinity School at River Ridge in Bloomington, Minn,. and resides in Roseville, Minn. She trains at Twin City Twisters with coaches Mike Hunger and Sami Wozney. Ennis is a two-time qualifier to the Junior Olympic Level 10 National Championship, earning trips to the national meet in both 2006 and 2007. In 2007, she took first place on vault and bars at the Level 10 regional meet, while finishing third in the all around and on the floor, and fourth on beam. She moved on to the national meet, where she had two top-10 finishes, coming in seventh on the bars and ninth in the all around. She finished among the top 20 in every event at the 2007 J.O. Nationals, placing 15th on vault, 17th on beam, and 19th on floor. In 2006, Ennis finished third on vault and beam, fourth in the all around, and fifth on bars at the Level 10 regionals. She advanced to the Level 10 national competition, where she came in 11th on bars and 15th on beam. Ennis received the Trinity at River Ridge Academic Award in 2007, and has received academic awards in math, science and humane letters. She intends to major in biology at the University of Minnesota. Ennis is the daughter of Jim and Sally Ennis.

Kylie Smith is a senior at Bishop Kelly High School in Tulsa, Okla., and resides in Broken Arrow, Okla. She attends Krafft Academy of Gymnastics and trains with coaches Kristi Krafft and Jean-Luc Cairon. Smith qualified for the Junior Olympic Level 10 National Championship in 2007 after placing first on vault, fourth on beam, and sixth in the all around at the regional meet. At the national meet, she finished 15th on vault, and came in 37th in the all around. She was third on vault and in the all around, and finished second on beam at the Oklahoma Level 10 State Championships in 2007. In 2006, Smith finished fourth on beam and won the floor at the Oklahoma Level 9 State Championship. She is a seven-time Oklahoma All-State team member, and a two-time recipient of the Nadia Comaneci Award. Academically, Smith is a National Honor Society President, and is a National Merit Commended Student. She has been on the “A” Honor Roll in every semester of high school so far. Smith was listed in the Who’s Who Among American High School Students in 2007, and has been nominated to attend the National Young Leaders Conference this year. At the University of Minnesota, Smith intends to major in business management or sports management. She is the daughter of M. Scott and MaryBeth Smith.
