Nine Gopher Freshman Wrestlers Compete in SDSU's Daktronics Open

Nine Golden Gopher true freshmen wrestlers competed in the 2007 15th Annual Warren Williamson Daktronics Open Saturday. The event was hosted by South Dakota State University and featured over 160 wrestlers from 14 different schools. The meet was held at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D.

New Gophers Zach Sanders (Wabasha, Minn.) and Sonny Yohn (Alamosa, Col.) took first place in their respective weight classes, while Luke Mellmer (Dickinson, N.D.) finished runner-up. Sanders, a five-time Minnesota state champion at the high school level, cruised to a 3-0 record in the 125-pound weight class, while Yohn also went an undefeated 4-0 at 184 pounds, including a pin in 3:54 of Beau Severtson in the championship bout.

All nine Gophers wrestled unattached, a list that also included David Zilverberg (0-2 at 133 pounds), Ryan Blake (1-2 at 141 pounds), Brian Peterson (4-2 and a sixth place finish at 149 pounds), Joel Hill (1-2 at 157 pounds), Jared Rickert (1-2, 157 pounds) and Kaleb Young (4-2, sixth place at 174 pounds).

The entire defending national championship Golden Gopher squad will officially begin its quest for another national title this Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Bison Open in Fargo, N.D. Minnesota's home dual meet season begins Dec. 2 when they take on national runners-up Iowa State at Williams Arena.

174 pounds: Kaleb Young, 4-2, 6th place
184 pounds: Sonny Yohn, 3-0, 1st place
