Purdue forward Loredana Riverso scored two goals to lead Purdue to a 3-1 Big Ten tournament quarterfinal victory over Northwestern. Her first came in the 12th minute of play, when teammate Shauna Stapleton crossed the ball into the box. Riverso managed to control the ball and knock it into the upper right corner of the goal. The next goal came in the 86th minute when Riverso ran along the goal line and shot the ball into the far post.
Northwestern was able to take an early 1-0 lead during the first minute of play when Kelsey Hans scored a left footed shot that reached the upper left corner. The lead did not last long when Stapleton assisted on Riverso’s first goal 11 minutes later. Later in the first half, Northwestern made an error when they accidentally kicked the ball into their own net on a cross. Going in at halftime, the Boilermakers led the Wildcats 2-1.
In the second half Purdue recorded many more shots and would total 26 by the end of the game. Northwestern pressured Purdue hard, but were not able to come up with any goals. In the final minutes of the game, Riverso scored her second goal of the match. Purdue managed to control the ball most of the last ten minutes and the match ended 3-1.
Purdue will face the winner of the Minnesota-Illinois match Friday at 8 p.m. at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament. The game will be shown on tape delay via the Big Ten Network.
