University of Minnesota diving coach Jason Baumann has announced that Emma Shankland (Kansas City, Mo.) has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Golden Gopher diving team in the fall of 2008.
Shankland dives with the North Kansas City High School and the Kansas City Dive Club. An NISCA All-American in 2005 and 2006, Shankland was also an all-state honoree as well as a three-time all-conference selection. She was a three-time most valuable player for her high school team in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and was the newcomer of the year in 2005. She enters her college career with a 1-meter best score of 248.60 (6 dives) and 401.00 (11 dives). Her score of 248.60 is also a school record. Shankland will graduate in 2008 and is a member of the National Honor Society.
"I am so pleased to have Emma choose the University of Minnesota,” Baumann said. “She is an outstanding student who considered several Ivy League schools including Princeton and Brown. I have had the pleasure of working with Emma the last three summers during our diving camp. She is a very talented athlete who brings a ton of enthusiasm to the pool. We can not wait to have her join our program here."
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to attend the University of Minnesota and dive for the Gophers over the next few years,” Shankland said. “The team, the coaches, the school and everything about the environment is wonderful. I am confident that it will be the perfect mix for my academic and athletic experiences, which will help shape me as both a student and an athlete.”
