Jillian Tyler, a freshman from Calgary, Alberta, was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week after her record-breaking performance at the Ohio State Invitational, Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in Columbus. Ohio. It is the second honor for Tyler this season in her short career.

Tyler had an impressive showing at the OSU Invite over the weekend, recording three NCAA A’ times and taking part in two winning relays which posted B’ times. Her first-place mark in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.82) ranks her second in Big Ten history, narrowly missing the conference record of 59.77 (Kristen Woodring, 2/16/01). Tyler’s 200 breaststroke time of 2:10.44 places her third on the all-time Big Ten performance list. In the Minnesota school recordbooks, Tyler broke two 10-year old 100 and 200 breaststroke records, which were previously set by NCAA champion and former Gopher Gretchen Hegener in 1997. The freshman’s final individual crown came in the 200 individual medley, clocking in at 1:58.97 which moves her into seventh all-time in the Big Ten. Tyler’s participation in the 400 medley relay aided the Gopher squad to a new school record (3:39.40).

The No. 9 University of Minnesota swimming and diving team are idle until it heads to Hawaii for its annual winter training trip. The Gophers will compete against California-Berkeley and Idaho in Kona, Hawaii on Jan. 5. Minnesota's next home action will be on Jan. 19 when the Gophers host Arizona State at the University Aquatic Center.
