Minnesota Gains 63 Fall Big Ten All-Academic Accolades

The Big Ten Conference announced that 63 student-athletes from the University of Minnesota have earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for the fall season. Minnesota sports included in the fall were men’s and women’s cross country, football, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.

Football had 24 members named to the Big Ten All-Academic team, including Adam Weber (Shoreview, Minn.), who was named to the Sporting News Big Ten All-Freshman Team and threw for a school-record 2,845 yards this past season. Honorable Mention All-Big Ten honorees Tony Brinkhaus (Bloomington, Minn.) and Steve Shidell (Coon Rapids, Minn.) also received the honors.

Men’s Cross Country had nine performers named to the Big Ten All-Academic team, highlighted by senior Justin Grunewald (Merrifield, Minn.) who received All-Region honors. Women’s Cross Country had 13 members named to the team, highlighted by sophomore All-American Jamie Cheever (Minneapolis, Minn.).

Women’s soccer had 10 players collect Big Ten All-Academic honors, including Second-Team All-Big Ten midfielder Kelsey Hood (Ankeny, Iowa). The women’s volleyball team also had seven players receive the academic honors, highlighted by two-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.).
