Golden Gopher Team Notes:
Tubby Smith moved to 6-1 as Minnesota’s head coach, and is now 393-146 in his career.
This is Minnesota’s first 6-1 start since it jumped out to the same start to begin the 2002-03 season.
Minnesota’s starting lineup consisted of senior Lawrence McKenzie, sophomore guard Lawrence Westbrook, junior forward Jamal Abu-Shamala, senior forward Dan Coleman and senior center Spencer Tollackson... Tonight’s game marked the fourth time this season and the fourth time in the last five games that head coach Tubby Smith has used this opening lineup... Minnesota is 4-0 with tonight’s starting lineup.
Tonight’s game marked McKenzie’s 60th career start, while Westbrook’s made just the eighth of his career... In the front-court, Abu-Shamala collected his 35th career start, Coleman made the 71st of his career and Tollackson notched his 40th start as a Gopher.
Minnesota scored a season-high 91 points tonight. It was the highest Golden Gopher point total since Jan. 3, 2005 when Minnesota had 93 points against Loyola Marymount.
The Golden Gophers have scored 91 and 88 points over the course of the last two games for a total of 179. That total is the most since Minnesota also scored 179 over the course of two games against St. Francis (Pa.) (85) and UNC Greensboro (94) on Dec. 22 and 29, 2004.
In Minnesota’s five games at Williams Arena this year it has outscored its opponents by an average 83.0 to 55.8.
Minnesota’s 50 first-half points were the most this season. It was highest first-half total since Dec. 21, 2005 when the Golden Gophers scored 53 points in the first half against Grambling.
Minnesota had a season-high 24 assists. It was the most assists by the Golden Gophers since they had 24 against South Dakota State on Dec. 7, 2006.
Minnesota had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2-to-1 (24 assists to 12 turnovers) on the night.
For a third straight game, Minnesota had five players score in double-figures.
Minnesota had two players (Dan Coleman, 22 pts & Blake Hoffarber 21 pts) with 20 points in the same game for the first time since Feb. 21, 2007 when Dan Coleman and Lawrence McKenzie each had 20 points against Indiana.
Golden Gopher Player Notes:
Spencer Tollackson had 16 points for his fourth double-figure scoring output of the year. It was the 30th time in his career that he has scored in double-figures.
Tollackson hit his second career three-pointer during the first half.
Tollackson tied his career-high in assists with five on the night.
Tollackson tied a career-high with three steals tonight.
Dan Coleman became the 34th Golden Gopher to score 1,000 career points tonight.
Coleman had a season-high 22 points, and a season-high 11 rebounds tonight.
Coleman scored 22 points for his fourth double-figure scoring game of the season. He also has 52 double-figure scoring games in his career.
Coleman played in his 100th career game tonight.
Coleman had his first double-double of the season (22 points and 11 rebounds), and the sixth of his career.
Blake Hoffarber had a career-high for three-pointers made with six.
Hoffarber’s six three-pointers were the most by a Golden Gopher this year.
Hoffarber had a career-high in points with 21.
Hoffarber has now scored in double-figures in four straight games for Minnesota.
Hoffarber is the first Golden Gopher freshman to have four straight double-figure scoring games since Kris Humphries accomplished the feat during the 2003-04 season on multiple occasions.
Lawrence McKenzie had a season-high five assists.
Al Nolen had his second straight double-figure scoring game with 11 points, and also his second of the season. Nolen has scored 26 points the last two games.
Damian Johnson had his third double-figure scoring game of the year with 10 points
Jonathan Williams had a season-high four blocks tonight. He has also recorded eight blocks in the last three games for the Golden Gophers.
