Rivals Compete for the 2nd Annual DQ Cup

A season’s worth of hard work by two of the WCHA’s elite teams has led to this exciting climax. The 2006-07 DQ Cup is on the line in the upcoming weekend series scheduled for Feb. 23-24.

That’s when the Gophers and Huskies play a home and home series to determine who claims the Cup for this season. If the Gophers can stop the Huskies with a win or even a tie in either of the games that weekend, they will retain the cup for the second year in a row. But, if the Huskies can win a pair from the Gophers, the Huskies will win the 2006-07 DQ Cup.

Both teams have had spectacular seasons and have been at or near the top of the WCHA standings all season long. Both have had long unbeaten streaks as well, and this weekend series is a fitting climax to the end of a very competitive DQ Cup season. The DQ Cup is an annual battle among the Gophers (5-0-3, .813), Huskies (5-2-3, .650), Minnesota State Mavericks (4-4-2, .500) and UMD Bulldogs (0-8-0, .000) where the winner of the cup is the team that posts the best winning percentage in head-to-head match-ups among the four Minnesota-based WCHA teams.
