The University of Minnesota men’s gymnastics team took sixth place at the Pacific Coast Classic in Oakland, Calif., with a score of 211.950. Despite finishing sixth, the Gophers easily posted their highest team score of the season.
Oklahoma won the meet with a score of 218.450. The Sooners were followed by Stanford (2nd, 216.650), California (3rd, 214.750), Michigan (4th, 214.400), Illinois (5th, 213.500) and Minnesota.
The Gophers were at their best on pommel horse, finishing with the third highest horse score of the meet with a mark of 33.95. Minnesota also had the fourth highest score on floor, posting a 36.45.
Gopher head coach Mike Burns was pleased with the way his team performed against top-flight competition.
“This was an incredible competition and our guys were challenged by five of the top teams in the country. We stayed with them pretty well and while we still have room to improve I think we are on the right track and have the ability to compete with the top teams in the nation.
“Pommel horse was our best performance of the year and our highest score of the year. We were the third best team of the meet on horse which is very encouraging. We also made some huge improvements on high bar this week but we still ran into a few problems. One thing I was really proud of with this team was the way they stayed together and stayed focused throughout the meet. When someone ran into trouble there was always someone prepared to pick up the slack. That’s the sign of a team that never gives up and stays in the fight from start to finish. We still have five weeks to eliminate the mistakes before we host the Big Ten Championships at the end of March."
