The Golden Gopher women’s basketball team was represented by three players on the Big Ten Conference honor squads, announced today. Sophomore Emily Fox (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led the way as she was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team by the coaches. Senior Kelly Roysland (Fosston, Minn.) was honored with a selection to the All-Big Ten Honorable Mention Team, while Brittany McCoy (Lincolnwood, Ill.) was named to the Big Ten’s All-Freshman Team. The Big Ten media voted Fox and Roysland to the Third Team.
The Conference coaches honored Ohio State senior Jessica Davenport as the Player of the Year, the Big Ten’s first three-time Player of the Year. Purdue’s Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton was named the Defensive Player of the Year, while Jim Foster was tabbed the Big Ten Coach of the Year by both the coaches and the media.
Fox and Roysland were honored with the first Big Ten postseason honors of their Gopher careers. Fox was the Golden Gophers’ leading scorer during the Big Ten season averaging 14.5 points per game. She finished among the top 10 in several Big Ten statistical categories, including scoring (10th), assists (3.88 apg. – 5th), steals (2.31 spg. – 5th) and free throw percentage (.848 – 10th).
Roysland was accorded All-Big Ten Third Team acclaim by the Conference media and honorable mention status by the coaches, despite missing four games due to a broken collarbone in the second half of the league season. Roysland tops the Gophers in scoring for the season at 13.1 points per game. Prior to the injury, Roysland was ranked among the top 10 scorers in the Big Ten. Roysland, the Gophers’ team captain and lone senior, became the 17th Golden Gopher to score 1,000 career points.
McCoy is the first Gopher rookie to be honored since 2002, when Janel McCarville was named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Year. The Big Ten coaches have since established a five-player All-Freshman Team. McCoy is one of only three freshmen in the Big Ten to start every game this season. She averaged 8.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.9 steals in her first Big Ten season. Michigan State’s Allyssa DeHaan was named the 2007 Freshman of the Year by both the Big Ten coaches and media.
