Minnesota shot 51 percent from the floor but could not overcome 25 turnovers in a devastating 69-65 loss at Indiana on Sunday. The Gophers fall to 13-11 overall and 5-6 in Big Ten play.

Emily Fox led the Gophers with 15 points and added eight rebounds and four assists before fouling out later in the game. Ashley Ellis-Milan and Leslie Knight each added 12 points.

The Gophers shot 58 percent in the first half, but couldn’t fully capitalize on their hot shooting being hampered by 14 turnovers. Fox scored her 11th point on a baseline jumper to give the Gophers a 27-11 lead at the 4:57 mark. Indiana’s scored seven points as the Hoosiers rattled off nine straight and finished the half on a 16-6 run. Minnesota held a 33-27 lead at intermission.

As the second half got underway, Indiana chipped away at the Gophers’ lead challenging Minnesota’s confidence and grit with every possession. Jordan Barnes hit a big three-pointer from the corner to give the Gophers a nine-point lead at 15:15. The Hoosiers’ Jamie Braun answered with an even bigger one at the other end.

The Hoosiers finally caught the Gophers at 48-48 on a Sarah McKay lay-in with 10:10 remaining. McKay scored again in Indiana’s next possession to give the Hoosiers their first lead.

Fox hit a jumper to tie the score at 50-50, and the team’s played to two more ties over the next four minutes. The Gophers scored five straight points, a trey by Barnes and a Knight lay-in to take a 63-62 lead, their final one, at the 3:32 mark.

Kim Roberson, who led the Hoosiers with 20 points, hit a running jumper and drew a foul from Knight and converted the three-point play in Indiana’s next possession to regain the lead. Minnesota turned the ball over and Indiana make the Gophers pay when McKay sank a turnaround jumper to put the Hoosiers up by four (67-63). Another Gopher turnover took away another chance to close the margin. This time, Minnesota’s defense rose to the occasion and forced a turnover of its own. Knight banked in a lay-up to bring the Gophers to within two at 67-65 with 2:18 left.

Minnesota had two chances to tie the score but shots by McCoy and Fox couldn’t find the bottom of the net. The Hoosiers added an insurance basket with 29 second remaining for the game’s final tally.

The Golden Gophers return to Williams Arena for two home games next week, Thursday versus Ohio State and Sunday against Indiana.
