Minnesota Heads to California on Spring Trip

• The Minnesota baseball program will embark on a six-day, five-game Southern California road trip from Mar. 13 to Mar. 18. Minnesota will face UC Santa Barbara in two games and No. 10 Pepperdine in three games. The Golden Gophers will face the Gauchos on Tuesday, Mar. 13 at 4 p.m. (CT) and on Wednesday, Mar. 14 at 4 p.m. (CT). Minnesota will then head to Malibu, Calif. to face No. 10 Pepperdine on Friday, Mar. 16 at 5 p.m. (CT), Saturday, Mar. 17 at 3 p.m. (CT) and Sunday, Mar. 18 at 1 p.m. (CT). UC Santa Barbara enters the week with a 6-8 overall record. Pepperdine, who was ranked as high as No. 10 in last week’s polls, is 15-5 overall.
• Minnesota will head to California for its spring trip for the third time in five years. The Golden Gophers went to Northern California in 2003 and Southern California in 2004. In 2003, Minnesota went 4-5 on a road trip against Pacific (3-0), San Jose State (0-1), Sacramento State (0-2) and Fresno State (1-2). The Golden Gophers went 2-3 on their road trip against Cal-State Fullerton (1-2), Cal-State Northridge (1-0) and UC Irvine (1-2). Minnesota returned to Fullerton later that year for the NCAA Regionals, and faced the eventual National Champion Cal-State Fullerton for a fourth time the NCAA Regionals.
• Minnesota senior outfielder Mike Mee brings a 13-game hitting streak into this week’s trip. Mee has a hit in all 11 games in the 2007 season, and had hits in the final two games of the 2006 campaign. He also had six multi-hit games, including two hits in Friday night’s contest against Miissouri State. Mee is batting .474 on the season at 18-for-38. His longest career hitting streak was 14 games in his freshman season. That streak spanned from Mar. 5 to Apr. 2, 2004.
• The Golden Gophers have three seniors who have pitched regularly for them this year. Those seniors include lefthanders Marcus McKenzie and Bill Johnson, and righthander Josh Oslin. Between the three seniors, they have gone 3-0 with all five Golden Gopher saves, a 1.93 ERA in 23.1 IP and given up 12 hits in a combined 11 appearances. Oslin had maded five appearances, recorded three saves and retired every batter he has faced in four innings of work. McKenzie is 2-0 with a save and a 2.38 ERA in three appearances, while Johson is 1-0 with a save and a 2.25 ERA in three appearances.
