Minnesota Gains 56 Winter Big Ten All-Academic Accolades

The Big Ten Conference announced that 56 student-athletes from the University of Minnesota have earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for the winter season. Minnesota sports included in the winter were men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s gymnastics and wrestling. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
Women’s Gymnastics, who competes in the Big Ten Championships this week, had eight gymnasts named to the Big Ten All-Academic team highlighted by sophomore Carmelina Carabajal (Albuquerque, N.M.). Carabajal, who was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week on Mar. 13, has posted the highest All-Around score (39.175 vs. Utah State, Mar. 17) for the Golden Gophers this year heading into this week’s Big Ten Championships.
Men’s Gymnastics was highlighted by Eddie Campbell (Salt Lake City, Utah) who has Minnesota’s third-highest mark of the season on the Floor Exercise heading into this week’s Big Ten Championships.
Women’s Swimming had 20 participants named to the Big Ten All-Academic team highlighted by Jenny Shaughnessy (Rochester, Minn.) who collected three All-American honors at the NCAA Championships this year.
Men’s Swimming had 16 participants named to the Big Ten All-Academic team highlighted by Igor Cerensek (Zagreb, Croatia), who picked up four All-American honors at the NCAA Championships this year to move his career total to 13.
Women’s Basketball had five players named to the team, highlighted by sophomore guard Emily Fox (Highland Ranch, Colo.) who was named Second-Team All-Big Ten this past season.
Wrestling was highlighted by C.P. Schlatter (Massillon, Ohio) who won the Big Ten Championship in the 157-pound weight class for a second year in a row and was an All-American for the Golden Gophers.
