AWARD LIMITS

The NCAA places limits on the amount of money spent on awards for student-athletes. All awards must originate from the appropriate NCAA approved source and must fall into one of three categories. Below are the categories and their respective limits.

Participation Awards

Annual participation awards may be awarded once per year, and must be awarded by the institution. Underclass awards are limited to $175, while Senior awards are limited to $325.

Special Event Participation awards for established meets, postseason tournaments, NCAA tournaments, or all-star games may be awarded once per event. The limits are as follows:

Postseason/NCAA Tournaments

  • Institution may spend $325 per award

All-Star Game or Postseason Bowl

  • Institution may spend $350 per award
  • Sponsor/Manager of event may spend $500 per award

Established Meets/Tournaments/Featured Individual Competition

  • All awards limited to $350 per award

Championship Awards

National Championship awards are to be given once per championship, and may be awarded by the institution and the conference

  • National Championship awards are limited to $415 per award
  • Conference Championships during the regular season and postseason tournament are limited to an aggregate maximum of $325 between the two awards

Special Achievement Awards

  • Special attainments or contributions to a team’s season (ie, scholar-athlete, most improved player, team MVP) may be awarded once per category per year and can only be awarded by the institution. These have a limit of $175 per award.
  • MVP awards for a special event may be awarded once per event and have a limit of $325. These may be awarded by the event-appropriate agency.
  • MVP awards for bowl games or all-star contests may be awarded once per event, and are to be awarded by the sponsoring entity of the event. The limit is $350.
  • Established regional/national recognition awards like the Heisman Trophy, Walter Camp Award or the Maxwell Trophy have a limit of $325 per award, however, the trophy recognizing the award has no limitation on dollar amount.
  • Specialized performance in contests during limited time frames (player of the week, player of the game) awards are limited to $80 and can only be in the form of a plaque or a medal.
  • Hometown awards are limited to $80.
