Akradi and Hasling Highlight Gophers in Friday Prelims

Roxane Akradi and Jenny Hasling highlighted the Friday morning preliminaries with a 16th and 17th place finish in the 100 back at the 2007 NCAA Championships, held at the University Aquatic Center on the U of M campus. With Akradi’s 16th place showing, she will compete in tonight’s 100 back consolation final.
Akradi just nudged out teammate Jenny Hasling when she touched the wall in the 54.12. Hasling competed in the event and clocked a time of 54.13, a career-best for the senior captain. Hasling entered the championships with a previous best time of 54.83. Akradi will look to break her own school record of 53.89 tonight, when she set the mark in the 400 medley relay yesterday.
Also competing in today’s individual prelim events were Christine Jennings, Yuen Kobayashi, Meredith McCarthy and Jenny Shaughnessy. In the 400 individual medley event, Shaughnessy missed the consolation finals by two spots and :00.29 when she finished 18th in a time of 4:15.49. Shaughnessy set a school record at the Georgia Invite when she chipped in a time of 4:13.44.
Jennings, Kobayashi and McCarthy all competed in the 200 freestyle event with McCarthy leading the pack. With a time of 1:47.95, McCarthy set a career-best time and is fourth on the Gophers all-time top five. Jennings and Kobyashi finished 44th and 45th in the event with a time of 1:49.07 and 1:49.08.
Minnesota also competed in the 200 medley relay. The relay of Hasling, Erika Bjorklund, Deidre DeWall and Stacy Busack combined for a time of 1:40.72 and a 19th-place finish.
The Gophers will also compete in the 800 free relay tonight. Minnesota’s highest relay ranking, the Maroon and Gold enter the event with a time of 7:11.87. Competing in the relay will be Kobyashi, Shaughnessy, McCarthy and Jennings.
