Minnesota Places Fifth at Big Ten Championships

Minnesota had a bye in the first rotation, and was up on vault in the second rotation. Ashley Stanton vaulted first, earning a 9.675 to tie her second-best vault score of the season. Jade Beattie followed, and earned a 9.725. Kelly Ganchan, Minnesota’s lone senior competitor, was third in the line up and scored a 9.70. Carmelina Carabajal was next, and earned the team’s best vault score with a 9.775 to tie for 15th place. Frosh Alexis Russell followed Carabajal, and earned a 9.70. Ashley Mutchler wrapped up Minnesota’s vault competition with a 9.675. As a team, Minnesota earned a 48.575.
The Gophers moved to bars in the third rotation, and earned a team score of 48.60. Carmelina Carabajal was the first performer, and tied her career-best with a 9.70. Alexis Russell followed Carabajal, and earned an 8.775. Sophomore Jade Beattie was third on the bars for the Gophers, and tallied a 9.725. Junior Rehana Russell was up next, and scored a 9.60. Junior Andy Cornelius was fifth in the line up for Minnesota, and earned a 9.725. Angela Walker was Minnesota’s final bars performer, and earned the team’s best score in the event with a 9.85. Walker’s score tied her second-best of the season, and tied for eighth place in the event.
Minnesota had a bye in the fourth rotation, and competed on beam in the fifth rotation. The Gophers struggled on beam, counting two falls in the season-low team score of 47.30. Junior Amanda Miles was up first, and recorded a 9.00. Carmelina Carabajal followed, and scored 9.475. Angela Walker was third in the rotation, and earned a 9.250. Ashley Stanton was up next, and tallied a mark of 9.775. Alexis Russell scored a personal-best mark of 9.80, bettering her pervious career high of 9.675. Russell’s score placed her in a tie for eighth place on beam. Ashley Mutchler was Minnesota’s final performer, and earned an 8.675.
After another bye, the Gophers were up on floor in the seventh and final rotation. Alexis Russell was the lead-off performer, earning a 9.750. Ashley Stanton followed with a 9.675. Angela Walker was third in the rotation, and earned a 9.750. Amanda Miles was up next for the Gophers, and tallied a 9.625. Andy Cornelius earned a 9.80 to tie for eighth place on floor. Carmelina Carabajal was the final competitor for Minnesota on floor, and earned a team-best 9.825 to tie for sixth place. Minnesota’s team score on floor was a 48.750, the Gophers’ best event score of the night.
Carmelina Carabajal tied for eighth place in the all around with a tally of 38.775. Alexis Russell also competed in the all around, earning a 38.025.
