PRACTICE HOURS
In-season Playing & Practice Hours
NCAA Bylaw 17.1.5.2 establishes that during the playing season, the maximum number of practice and competition hours is twenty per week, and four per day. There is no limitation on practice hours during a vacation period.
Days Off
During the playing season, a coach is required to give student-athletes one day off per week. Outside the playing season, coaches are required to provide two off days per week. There are two exceptions to the day off rule. First, a coach is not required to give a day off during an official University vacation period, provided classes are not in session that week. Second, a coach is not required to give a day off during Big Ten Conference Tournament or NCAA Tournament play.
Off-season Playing & Practice Hours
Outside of a playing season, teams are limited in the number of hours per week they are allowed to practice, and the number of hours that may be used for individual skill instruction. Beginning with the first day of classes, all sports other than Football are allowed a maximum of eight hours per week for countable athletically related activity, two of which may be used for individual skill instruction. More than four (4) student-athletes from the same team may be involved in skill related instruction with coaches from September 15 – April 15. After April 15, no more than four (4) student-athletes from the same team may be involved in individual skill instruction. Please note that all athletically related activities outside the playing season must cease one week prior to final exams. During a sport’s off-season this spring, the last day for all mandatory individual skill and weight training activity is Sunday, April 29 with final exams starting Monday, May 7.
