DONATION TO A FORMER HIGH SCHOOL AND OTHER YOUTH ORGANIZATIONS
As touched upon last week, the NCAA generally precludes donations to prospect aged individuals and organizations comprised of prospect-aged individuals with limited exceptions. The NCAA’s logic in doing this is that the donation may exert undue influence in the recruiting process. Bylaw 13.16.1.5 covers these situations
There are three exceptions to this line of thinking.
The first exception is that per a 2000 NCAA Interpretation, a staff member of the athletics department may donate to either their former high school, or to their child’s high school.
The second exception to 13.16.1.5 concerns donations to bona fide youth organizations such as the YMCA or the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts of America. Donations to such organizations are now permissible according to the NCAA.
The third exception is that the institution may loan rowing equipment to a high school’s or junior club’s women’s teams on an issuance and retrieval basis.
If you have any questions, please contact the Compliance Office.
