While on campus to speak at the 2007 University of Minnesota Alumni Association’s Annual Celebration on Tuesday, Tony Dungy, head coach of the Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts, also stopped by for a visit with the 2007 national champion Golden Gopher wrestling team.

Dungy spent approximately an hour with the team not only to offer his congratulations but also to provide some inspiring words.

The former Gopher quarterback has maintained ties to the University in many ways and continues to be a huge supporter of Gopher athletics, crediting his experiences at Minnesota for helping him become as successful as he is today.

“I happen to think that [athletics] pays off in a lot of ways and I, for one, am very grateful to the University of Minnesota because it paid off for me,” Dungy said during the alumni reception.

In following the wrestling team’s success throughout the 2006-07 season, Dungy sent head coach J Robinson and the Gophers a personally signed football to wish them good luck prior to the NCAA Championships in March. After Minnesota captured its third national title in the last seven years, Dungy also sent the team a letter offering his congratulations.
