The Minnesota men’s track & field team needed its runner-up finish in the 4x400-meter relay to secure their second-place team finish at the 2007 Big Ten Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend in State College, Pa. The Golden Gophers tallied 100.50 points, behind Wisconsin’s winning total of 145.50 points.

“We had a nice meet,” said Golden Gopher head coach Phil Lundin. “It was great to see our older guys like Adam (Schnaible), Derek (Gearman) and Buzz (Aaron Buzard) have outstanding performances in their final Big Ten meets.”

Aaron Buzard placed in two individual events on Sunday. Buzard sprinted to runner-up honors in the 400-meter dash in a season-best time of 45.80 seconds. The senior added an eighth-place showing in the 200 meters in 22.29 seconds. Buzard then anchored the Gophers’ 4x400-meter relay to its second-place finish in 3:07.38.

Going into the meet’s final event, the 4x400, Wisconsin had secured its team victory but 3.5 points separated second through fifth places in the team standings. Jason Erickson, Sayfe Jassim and Walter Langkau ran the first three legs of the relay. Buzard sprinted passed two runners in the last 100 meters, nearly catching Illinois at the tape. Illinois’ winning time was 3:07.32.

Gopher senior throw Adam Schnaible concluded an impressive Big Ten meet, adding a runner-up finish in the shot put to his hammer title from Friday. Schnaible marked his best throw, 58-3 1/4, in his first throw of the final.

Sophomore Ibrahim Kabia ran to a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash. Kabia posted a time of 10.54 seconds. He also ran the 4x100-meter relay with Adebayo, Derek Gearman and Erickson that placed fourth with a time of 41.24 seconds.

Gearman completed his trio of jumping events with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump. Gearman landed his best leap of the season, 51-0 1/4, on his first attempt of finals. Gearman placed second in the high jump and long jump on Saturday and contributed a team’high21 points to Minnesota’s tally.

The Gophers received scoring efforts from two runners in the 800-meter run. Walter Langkau was fourth in a career-best time of 1:49.95. Hans Storvick tallied a seventh-place finish in 1:51.04.

Freshman Ben Peterson tied for fifth in the pole vault, clearing a career-best height of 16-6 3/4. The mark is an NCAA Midwest Region Championships qualifier and the sixth-best vault in school history.
