Minnesota’s selection to the San Diego NCAA Regional, marks the third time in a row the Golden Gophers have been sent to California for NCAA Regional play. Minnesota’s last two appearances in the NCAA Tournament have been at Long Beach State in 2003 and Cal State Fullerton in 2004. Overall, the Golden Gophers have appeared in the NCAA Regionals in California seven different times. Minnesota also made regional trips to Stanford in 1987, Fresno State in 1988, Los Angeles in 1991 and Stanford in 1998.
The Golden Gophers will be facing Cal State Fullerton for the eighth time since 2003. Minnesota last met the Titans in the 2004 NCAA Regional at Fullerton, Calif. The Golden Gophers lost 7-1 in a pitching matchup that featured that year’s College World Series Most Outstanding Player Jason Windsor and current Minnesota Twin Glen Perkins. Minnesota ended up scoring the only run off Windsor until his final appearance in the College World Series, as the Titans claimed the 2004 National title. Minnesota met up with Cal State Fullerton earlier that year as well, as the Titans took two of three from the Golden Gophers at their ballpark. Minnesota won the middle game of that series when it rallied for four runs in the ninth after trailing 7-4. The Golden Gophers led 2-1 in the sixth inning of the third game of the series, before Cal State Fullerton scored nine runs in the sixth and seventh to win 10-2. Minnesota also won two of three over the then second-ranked Titans in the Metrodome in 2003. In the series finale, David Roach had an RBI double in a shortened eight-inning game (due to travel arrangements) off Washington Nationals closer Chad Cordero to give the Golden Gophers the series. Minnesota is 1-3 against Fresno State and 2-2 against San Diego.
