Minnesota Baseball Signs Phil Isaksson to Letter of Intent

The Minnesota baseball team has signed Phil Isaksson to a letter of intent to join the Golden Gophers in the 2008 season according an announcement by Minnesota Head Coach John Anderson on Tuesday, June 12. Isaksson joins Kyle Geason, Dustin Klabunde, Mike Kvasnicka, AJ Pettersen, Trip Schultz, Seth Rosin, Cullen Sexton and Luke Rasmussen who signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period, along with Nick O’Shea who was added as a recruited walk-on.

Isaksson is a 6-0, 182-pound pitcher out of Eau Claire North High School in Eau Claire, Wis. He enters the 2007 Wisconsin High School State Tournament as a member of the No. 1 ranked team in Division I. This year, Isaksson is 6-0 with two saves, a 0.29 ERA, and 80 strikeouts in 47.0 innings. On the season, he has given up just two earned runs (three overall) in 47.0 innings. At the plate, Isaksson is batting .400 with 20 runs, four home runs and 17 RBI.

Entering this year, Isaksson had a 17-2 career record, which has been raised to 23-2 at this point. Last year, he was named Third-Team All-State as a junior and was selected to play on Team Wisconsin. Isaksson was also named First-Team All-District last year as well.

“Phil (Isaksson) is a strong addition to what we already feel is an outstanding recruiting class,” said Anderson. “Being a good lefthanded pitcher, he fills a need for us. We looked at him last year and he has gotten consistently better throughout his career. We feel like he has a lot of potential to be a good lefthanded pitcher at the Division I level, and with some of the lefthanded pitching we have lost the last couple of years that is a valuable thing to have. We think he can come in and contribute early on in his career for us, and that he can be a very good pitcher at this level.”

Minnesota also had three of its early signees drafted last week, as Seth Rosin was drafted in the 28th round with the 872nd pick by the Minnesota Twins, Mike Kvasnicka was drafted in the 31st round with the 961st pick by the Minnesota Twins and Cullen Sexton was drafted in the 43rd round with the 1,276th pick by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Nick O’Shea, Kyle Geason, A.J. Pettersen and Kvasnicka were also named to the Star Tribune All-Metro Team as well.

Todd Oakes, Pitching Coach, on Phil Isaksson “Phil is a lefthanded pitcher that we have followed since last year. He has made a big improvement over that time, and has had an increase in velocity to go along with his great command. He has a very competitive breaking ball as well. Phil should be a strong addition to our staff. We feel like he has the ability to contribute right away, and could be used as a lefthanded reliever out of the bullpen as a freshman.”
