The University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team set a school record and earned its first event win at the Mission Viejo Nadadores TYR Swim Meet of Champions, June 14-17 in Mission Viejo, California.

Roxane Akradi took home the championship in the 100-meter backstroke when she won the event in a time of 1:04.16. She is the first person from Minnesota to take home an event championship since the Golden Gophers started attending the event nine years ago. Minnesota’s 800-meter free relay of Christine Jennings, Jenny Shaughnessy, Meredith McCarthy and Stacy Busack clocked a time of 8:27.82, a school record, and placed second overall. The foursome broke the previous school record of 8:32.40, held by Erin O’Neil, Shaughnessy, Jenny Chang and Busack in 2006.

Jennings earned a second-place finish in the 400 free with a time of 4:15.91, while holding the fifth-fastest time in the 200 free (2:04.25). She also helped out the 400 free relay to a fifth-place finish with Akradi, Busack and McCarthy. Shaughnessy earned a sixth-place showing in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:59.15, while posting 17th place in the 200 back (2:22.34).

Yuen Kobyashi competed in three events at the meet, including a fifth-place spot in the 400 free (4:20.50). Koabyashi also competed in the 200 free and placed 14th (2:05.90) and 33rd in the 100 free (59.81). Kait Strickland placed in the top 16 in two events in the 200 breast and the 400 IM. Strickland earned eighth overall in the 400 IM in 5:11.00, while placing 16th in the 200 breast (2:45.04).

Minnesota dominated the 200 back event. Along with her top spot in the 100 back, Akradi finished eighth overall in the 200 back (2:24.21). Former Gopher Katie Wind placed 14th (2:23.01), while Erin Forster earned a 15th-place showing (2:24.23). Deidre DeWall also competed in the event with a time of 2:25.37, good enough for 23rd overall. She also placed 11th in the 400 IM (5:04.00).

Like Wind, former Gopher Keri Hehn had a good showing at the meet, finishing second in both of her events. Hehn placed second in the 100 (1:09.48) and the 200 (2:27.88) breaststroke events.

Incoming freshmen Molly Belk and Courtney Veerman were also represented at the meet. Belk placed fourth in the 200 fly with a time of 2:15.45. She also clocked a time of 1:06.84 for 24th overall in the 100 fly. Veerman competed in four events in the 200 fly and the 200, 400 and 1500 free. Veerman placed 10th in the 1500 free (17:32.16), 14th in the 400 free (4:25.43), 15th in the 200 fly (2:21.62) and 21st in the 200 free (2:07.80).
