Derek Gearman Finishes 12th in Triple Jump at NCAA Championships

Minnesota senior Derek Gearman finished 12th in the final of the triple jump at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., on Saturday. The final equals his NCAA outdoor finish from a year ago.
Gearman fouled his first two attempts of the final preliminary round and marked his only legal jump of 50 feet, 9 1/2 inches on his third attempt. The top nine competitors earned three more jumps. Cornell junior Ray Taylor won the national title on his sixth and final jump, landing a leap of 53-8 1/2.
Florida State captured the national title with 54 points, while LSU finished in second with 48. Minnesota did not score.
