Two Ferrazzi titles highlight solid weekend for Gophers

Minnesota freshman Alessandra Ferrazzi polished off two titles Sunday to lead the Gophers on the final day of the Gopher Invitational at Baseline Tennis Center. Ferrazzi bested teammate Tijana Koprivica in the final of the Maroon bracket by a 6-2, 6-2 tally and teamed with junior Karina Chiarelli to upend Eastern Michigan’s Vanessa Frankowski and Aleksandra Stankovic 8-2 in the final of the North doubles bracket.
Sophomores Mikayla Rogers and Jackie Sperling also had good days for Minnesota, teaming to capture the consolation championship in the North Flight with an 8-5 win over the Iowa State squad of Erin Karonis and Liza Wischer. Sperling captured third place in the Gold Flight with a 6-4, 6-4 singles victory over UNI’s Taynara Moraes and Rogers won her own singles match in the consolation bracket of the same flight, 6-2, 6-1 over ISU’s Chrissy Derouin.
Buoyed by an unbeaten 4-0 mark in doubles play Sunday, the Gophers finished the weekend with a 40-20 overall record that included a 14-5 mark in doubles play.
Eastern Michigan also had a strong showing this weekend and collected two titles. Senior Catherina Bestehorn captured the Gold Flight with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Minnesota’s Chiarelli. With a straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 victory over Gustavus Adolphus’ Laura Arnebeck, EMU senior Flavia Micati captured the Minnesota Flight.
The Star Flight crown went to Northern Iowa’s Ashton Schwerin and Diana Mendez who beat South Dakota State’s Nellie Bloomberg and Jennifer Sondreal 8-2.
The Gophers are next in action next weekend at the New Mexico Invitational in Albuquerque.
