The defending Big Ten-champion Minnesota Golden Gopher men's swimming and diving team began their 2007-2008 season Friday evening at the University of Minnesota's Dorothy L. Sheppard pool as they hosted their annual alumni meet.

The evening for the Minnesota was highlighted by junior transfer Jon Roberts' big night. Roberts transferred from national power Auburn during an off-season that saw him capture third place in the 100 breaststroke at the Japan International Grand Prix competing for Team USA and record what was the second fastest time in the world by an American at the time. On Friday night, Roberts collected victories in the 50 freestyle (20.96) and the 100 individual medley (51.30).

The Gophers' freshman class also performed well. The frosh were led by Curt Carlson, who took the 100 freestyle in 45.76, and Ivan Gutesa, who won the 100 breaststroke in 58.88.

Also winning for Minnesota was Kevin Ewald in the 100 backstroke (53.93), Michael Woodson in the 50 butterfly (22.90), Erich Welton in the 50 backstroke (24.04) Jason Timmer in the 50 breaststroke (26.38), Colin Lee-To in the 25 freestyle (9.45), and Mark Solfelt in the 100 butterfly (51.58).

The Gopher men return to action next Saturday as they host their intrasquad meet back at the Dorothy L. Sheppard pool.
