Cathie Twomey dominated middle distance running at the University of Minnesota during the mid-1970s like no one else before her. Twomey won eight conference championships (three of those on relay teams) in track and field, and another conference title in cross country between 1976-78. She was a four-time cross country All-American from 1974-78 and was a track All-American from 1976-77. Twomey went on to achieve international running recognition after dominating the Big Ten during her collegiate career. She ran for Athletics West, out of Eugene, Ore., and in 1984 was ranked second in the U.S. in the 5,000 meters, and eighth in the world. In addition, in 1982 she set the women's world record in the 20K.
