Dorothy (Lestina) Sheppard graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1929. An extremely generous benefactor, Sheppard established the first endowment fund for women's athletics scholarships, and her most generous gift ensured 10 swimming and diving scholarships every year for future women athletes. An active member of the Patty Berg Development Fund Advisory Council, Sheppard had been a strong supporter of the University over the years. Although there was not an athletic department when she attended school at the U of M, she earned an "M" letter sweater by gathering 1,000 points from participating on the different athletic teams. Those activities included serving as the president of the Aquatic League in 1927, on the Women's Athletics Association board from 1926-28, and as captain of the field hockey team in 1929. Among (Lestina) Sheppard's many accolades, the University of Minnesota honored her by naming the Aquatics Center in her honor.
