Harvey Mackay |
Best-selling author and business mogul Harvey Mackay played golf for the Gophers from 1953-54. Mackay, who would later go on to attend the Stanford University Graduate School of Business Executive Program, then purchased a small, failing envelope company in 1959, which has since grown to a $100 million business employing over 600 people. Today, Mackay Envelope Company is one of the nation's major envelope manufacturers, producing 25 million envelopes a day. As chairman, Mackay's philosophy is engrained in the company, beginning with its motto: "Do what you love, love what you do and deliver more than you promise."
As a New York Times Nov. 1 best-selling author, Mackay's books have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, been translated into 37 languages and sold in 80 countries. In addition Mackay is also a nationally syndicated columnist whose articles appear weekly in 52 newspapers around the country. A master marketer, promoter and networker, Mackay is also one of America's most popular and entertaining business speakers. In fact, Toastmasters International named him one of the top five speakers in the world. Furthermore, he has been a guest lecturer at various universities and business schools, including Harvard, Stanford, Michigan, Cornell and Wharton, among others.
As for the U of M, there aren't many individuals who can stack up to him in terms of lifetime contributions for their beloved Gophers. He is without question one of the school's ultimate boosters. Mackay has been extremely generous with his time and resources towards the University over the years and is a very philanthropic person. An avid golfer, marathoner and tennis player, Mackay truly bleeds Maroon and Gold.
