Jane Oas Benson was an instrumental forerunner in establishing the women's track and field program at the University of Minnesota. Oas Benson competed in the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Trials and was a 1976 United States Track and Field (USTF) All-American. In addition, she had three top ten finishes at the collegiate national meets from 1973 to 1976. As a senior, in 1976, she finished first in the 220 and 440 yard dashes and ran the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay at the Big Ten Championships. Oas Benson graduated from the University with seven career track records and went on to earn her master's degree in business administration in 1980. Among her many honors and accolades, Oas Benson was named as one of the outstanding women in Minnesota by Twin Cities Yearbook in 1980.
