The Minnesota baseball program will hold an Alumni Weekend on Mar. 7-9 during the Metrodome Tournament according to an announcement by Minnesota head coach John Anderson.
Minnesota will honor four Big Ten Championship teams over the weekend, as it pays tribute to the 1958, 1968, 1988 and 1998 conference championship teams. Those teams will be honored prior to each Golden Gopher game that weekend. Minnesota will also welcome all baseball alumni back to the Metrodome that weekend for other festivities.
The Golden Gophers will be celebrating their 120th season during the Alumni Weekend, and throughout the course of the year. Minnesota will face New Mexico on Friday, Mar. 7 at 6:35 p.m., California on Saturday, Mar. 8 at 6:35 p.m. and Northern Iowa on Saturday, Mar. 9 at 3:05 p.m.
This year will mark the 50th anniversary of the 1958 team that won the fourth Big Ten title in school history. That team went 26-7, including a 12-game winning streak after starting out 0-2, won the Big Ten at 11-3 and advanced to the NCAA Regionals.
The 1968 team will celebrate its 40th anniversary. That team went 35-9, won 26 of its final 28 regular-season games, was 14-2 in Big Ten play and advanced to the NCAA Regionals. The 1988 team will celebrate its 20th anniversary. That squad was 38-28, finished second in the Big Ten regular-season at 17-11 and went 4-1 to win the Big Ten Tournament. After losing the first game of the conference tournament, the Golden Gophers bounced back to win the next four games to claim their third Big Ten Tournament title in school history.
In 1998, Minnesota set what was then a school record with 45 wins as it went 45-15. That squad finished second in the Big Ten regular-season at 19-9, but went 3-0 in the Big Ten Tournament to advance to the NCAA Regionals. The Golden Gophers .750 winning percentage for Minnesota that year was the best by a team coached by Anderson.
