Emily Fox scored 29 and Katie Ohm added 17 points, including five three pointers, to lead Minnesota to a 81-69 win over Michigan State on Sunday at Williams Arena. The Golden Gophers improve to 15-6 overall and 6-3 in Big Ten play.

Minnesota took charge early with Fox scoring the first seven points and spotting the Gophers a 7-2 lead. Four minutes into the game, however, the Gopher leader was whistled for her second offensive foul and was forced to the bench with Minnesota clinging to an 8-5 advantage.

The Gophers didn’t miss a beat with their court leader on the sidelines. A three-point play by Ashley Ellis-Milan expanded the lead to seven points (12-5) and three minutes passed before Fox re-entered the game with the score 12-6. Then over the next four minutes, Fox and the Gophers surged on an 11-0 run with Ohm hitting the first of her five triples and Fox adding a pair of jumpers to give Minnesota a 23-8 lead with 9:25 left before halftime.

Michigan State (12-10, 4-6) used an 8-0 run, with four different players contributing points, later in the half to bring the deficit to five points at 29-24 with 4:17 remaining. Ohm halted the Spartan rally with her second three pointer of the game, a shot that ignited a 9-0 run to end the half with Minnesota leading 38-24.

Fox had 16 of her 25 points in the first half and the Gophers led by 14 points despite committing 14 turnovers. The difference was Michigan State shooting just 22.9 (8-35) in the half.

The second half opened with Ohm netting her third trey and the Gophers built as big as a 20-point lead at 50-30 at the 15:30 mark. Spartan reserve guard Mandy Piechowski, who scored a team-high 14 points, hit a trio of second-half three pointers to help Michigan State chip away at the Gopher lead.

The Spartans closed to within six points on a Mia Johnson lay-in with 1:40 left to play but it would turn out to be the last Michigan State points of the game. Fox and Leslie Knight, who added 13 points after a career 33 in the win over Ohio State, both sunk free throws to seal the victory and Kay Sylva’s breakaway lay-up with six ticks left put an exclamation point on the victory.

Ashley Ellis-Milan scored 12 as the fourth Gopher in double digits. Ellis-Milan and Zoe Harper teamed to defend the Spartans’ 6-9 center Allyssa DeHaan, who finished with 10 points on 3-10 from the field. Brittany McCoy led the Gophers with six assists.

Minnesota faces a tough task next week with road games at Purdue (Jan. 31) and Ohio State (Feb. 3). The Gophers are currently in second place in the Big Ten, a half game from the first-place Buckeyes, who play host to Penn State on Monday.
