Off to its first 3-0 start since the 1996-97 season, Minnesota's women's tennis team will face a pair of tough tests this weekend with two matches against nationally-ranked opponents in North Carolina.
The Golden Gophers take on 17th-ranked North Carolina on Saturday in Chapel Hill and then face 37th-ranked North Carolina State on Sunday in Raleigh. Minnesota enters the weekend ranked 64th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings.
The Gophers opened the year by cruising to wins over Drake, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and South Dakota State. Featuring a deep roster with 13 players, Minnesota has already used 11 different singles players and eight different doubles tandems. The Gophers did not drop a doubles match in any of their first three matches and won all but two singles matches.
Including fall competition, No. 1 singles player Alessandra Ferrazzi leads the Gophers with a 13-3 overall record. She has also joined Karina Chiarelli for a 13-3 mark at No. 1 doubles. Chiarelli owns an 11-5 record in No. 2 singles competition.
