Gophers Earn a Dual Win During Winter Training Trip

The University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team competed against Idaho during its winter training trip in Kona, Hawaii. The Golden Gophers won the dual meet 127-56 on Saturday with Minnesota winning every event contested.

Minnesota opened the competition with a win in the 200 medley relay. The Gopher relay of Roxane Akradi, Jillian Tyler, Megan Braun and Stacy Busack combined for a time of 1:46.29.

The Gophers took the top two spots in the 200 freestyle. Yuen Kobayashi won the event in a time of 1:50.81, while Jenny Shaughnessy finished second in 1:52.41. Courtney Veerman placed fourth in the event in 1:55.96. The Gophers followed with taking the top three finishes in the 50 free. Meredith McCarthy earned the win with a time of 23.82, while Busack finished second in 23.90, while Meagan Radecke placed third in 24.78.

Deidre DeWall won her first of two events in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:05.10. Kait Strickland earned a second-place time of 2:07.71, while Erin Forster followed in third in 2:11.81. Braun won the 100 butterfly when she touched the wall in 57.43. Danielle Ridder clocked a time of 57.85 for second and Kaylee Jamison placed fourth overall in 58.41.

Meredith McCarthy won her second event of the meet, this time in the 100 free. McCarthy chipped in a winning time of 52.09, while Kobayashi followed in second with a time of 52.17. Christine Jennings added a third-place showing in 54.07.

DeWall earned her second win of the day in the 100 backstroke. She finished with a winning time of 57.24. Veerman the 500 free when she touched the wall in 5:08.19. Tyler won the 100 breaststroke when she put in a winning time of 1:02.59.

The Gophers closed out the dual with a win in the 200 free relay. Busack, Erin Holtmeyer, McCarthy and Akradi teamed together for a winning time of 1:36.65.

Minnesota will continue its training trip and will return to action on Jan. 19 when Arizona State comes to town. The meet is scheduled for a noon start at the University Aquatic Center.
