Gold Team Claims Steak ?N Beans Series

The Gold Team defeated the Maroon Squad 4-1 to win the Steak N Bean Series in five games on Friday, Oct. 10.
On the day, the Gold Team produced nine hits, including a 3-for-3 day by Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.). Puhl also scored three runs in the game. Kyle Knudson (Maple Grove, Minn.) also had two hits and two RBI, while JT Canakes finished with two hits on the day as well.
Puhl got the Gold Team on the board when he singled to right field, moved to second base on a wild pitch and score on an RBI single by Knudson to make it 1-0.
The Maroon Team tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning. Jon Hummel (Lakefield, Minn.) reached on a wild pitch on a third strike to get things started. He moved up on Trip Schultz’s (Forest Lake, Minn.) single, and scored on an RBI single by Kurt Schlangen (Albany, Minn.) to tie the game at 1-1.
In the third inning, the Gold Team took the lead for good. Puhl led off with a single to center field, and came home to score on an RBI double by Derek McCallum (Shoreview, Minn.) to give the Gold Team a 2-1 lead. Canakes followed with a one-out RBI single to plate McCallum, and put the Gold Team ahead 3-1.
The Gold Team scored a single run in the fifth to go up 4-1 when Puhl was hit by a pitch, and scored on a Knudson RBI double.
Cullen Sexton (Plover, Wis.) got the win in relief for the Gold Team. He combined with Chauncy Handran (Scobey, Mont.) and Tyler Oakes (Jordan, Minn.) to give up just five hits and one run in seven innings of work. Oakes pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning to pick up the save for the Gold squad.
Tom Buske (Apple Valley, Minn.) pitched 2.2 shutout innings and struck out three batters for the Maroon Team. Scott Fern (Eau Claire, Wis.) took the loss for the Maroon Team.
The Maroon offense was led by Justin Gominsky (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Schlangen who each had two hits in the game. Schlangen knocked in the only run for the Maroon Team in the game.
NOTES: The Golden Gophers will play the last two games of the series, despite the fact that the Gold Team won in five games ... the sixth game was on Friday, Oct. 11 at 12 p.m.
