Gophers head to Purdue for Lady Northern

PURDUE LADY NORTHERN: Minnesota will stay in Big Ten Country for their next competition as they will head to West Lafayette, Ind. to compete in the Purdue Lady Northern this weekend.
The Invite, which is played at the site of that year’s Big Ten Championships, will take place at Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, a 6,276 yard, par 72 course. The Gophers finished 12th in last year’s event that was hosted by Penn State.
The tournament field includes Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Toledo and Wisconsin.
The 14-team field will participate in a 54-hole invitational playing in threesomes, the teams will play 36 holes Saturday in a shotgun format starting at 8:00 a.m. Central. Pairings for the final 18 holes on Sunday will be determined by scores. Sunday’s shotgun start will also be at 8:00 a.m. The low four individual scores will determine the team score for each round.
BADGER INVITATIONAL RECAP: The University of Minnesota women's golf team used a pair of top-20 finishes by two of its sophomores to finish third in the Badger Invitational with a 54-hole total of 908. California won the invitational by carding a 25-over par 889, 13 shots better than runner-up Wisconsin. The College of Charleston and Tulane round out the top-five.
Sophomore Teresa Puga was the top finisher for the Gophers in eighth place with a 5-over par 221 after rounds of 77-70-74. She has finished in the top-10 in two of three tournaments Minnesota has played this season. Mary Narzisi, another sophomore, rebounded from an opening round 82 with rounds of 71 and 75 and finished in a tie for 16th.
Michele Edlin, yet another Gopher sophomore, and Paige Bromen both carded 54-hole totals of 233 and finished in a six-way tie for 26th. Senior Kelli Berns finished in a tie for 38th while Young Na Lee, playing in the Badger Invite as an individual, finished in a tie for 43rd.
THE GOPHERS: Minnesota’s lineup this weekend will include seniors Kelli Berns and Paige Bromen and sophomores Michele Edlin, Mary Narzisi and Teresa Puga. Fellow sophomore Samantha Sommers will be playing the tournament as an individual.
UP NEXT: The Gophers will take a weekend off before heading to Las Vegas, Nev. to take part in the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Oct. 27-29. The Las Vegas event will mark the end of the Gophers fall season.
Minnesota will open the spring portion of its schedule on Feb. 8-10 at the Puerto Rico Shootout in Rio Mar, P.R. The Gophers will play in five spring events before taking part in the 2009 Big Ten Championships, at the aforementioned Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West lafayette, Ind.
