Gopher Men in D.C. for Georgetown Intercollegiate

GEORGETOWN INTERCOLLEGIATE: The Gophers have been off since finishing fourth at the Fighting Irish Invitational on Oct. 7 but will now have to head to our Nation’s Capital to take part in the 24th annual Georgetown Intercollegiate. The teams will be playing 54 holes at the Members Club at Four Streams golf course. Play begins on Oct. 21 at 9 a.m. and can be followed live at www.golfstat.com.

Gopher Junior Ben Pisani has been the most consistent golfer for Minnesota, having finished in the top 12 individually in all of team’s three tournaments. He will bring with him a stroke average of 73.11 with him to the D.C. area. Senior Victor Almstrom is the team leader with a 73 stroke average.

The field is as follows: the host Georgetown Hoyas, Campbell University, DePaul University, University of Detroit, Gonzaga University, Miami of Ohio University, University of Minnesota, University of Richmond, St. John's University, St. Joseph's University, UNC- Greensboro and College of William & Mary.

FIGHTING IRISH INVITE RECAP:  After nine holes on Sunday the team title was still in reach but it was not the day for Minnesota, as they finished in fourth place with a combined 54-hole score of 874. 

Minnesota was led on the final day by senior Victor Almstrom with a 1-over par round of 71. He made the turn in the morning at even for the day and shot his way to two under after 12 holes until hitting a rough stretch on holes 14-16. He finished the tournament in a three-way tie for 17th at 10-over par (220). Junior Ben Pisani finished in a tie for 12th place at 8-over par (218), his best 54-hole score of the season, and has now paced the Gophers in two of the squad’s three tournaments this fall. 

Seniors Yu Katayama and Andy Paulson finished in a five-way tie for 22nd at 12-over par (222) while freshman Derek Chang concluded his third collegiate tournament in a tie for 29th. Sophomore Cameron White, competing in the tournament as an individual, rebounded with a 75 on Tuesday after shooting an 83 in the afternoon on Monday and finished 23-over par.

THE GOPHERS: Minnesota’s lineup will consist of seniors Victor Almstrom, Patrick Datz  and Yu Katayama along with junior Ben Pisani and sophomore Cameron White. Senior Andy Paulson will make the trip and play the tournament as an individual.

UP NEXT: The Gophers will play in their final fall event on Oct. 27-28 when they take part in the Bridgestone Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina. The championship will be played at Forest Oaks Country Club, a 7,197 yard, par 72 course designed by Ellis Maples.
