The University of Minnesota women’s golf team knew they needed a good day on the links to make a move Sunday in the final round of the 2008 Lady Northern at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. They started the day in a tie for 12th place but put together their best score of the 54-hole event with a 303 to move up five spots and finish in seventh with a combined score of 941.
After opening the event on Saturday with a round of 328, the Gophers rebounded with a 310 in the afternoon session and bettered that on Sunday with the aforementioned 303. Sophomore Teresa Puga continued her consistent play with a 3-over par 75 on Sunday to finish the day where she started, in a tie for fifth place. She has now placed in the top 10 in three of the team’s four tournaments this fall.
Senior Paige Bromen’s weekend was similar to what the Gophers as a team went through. She struggled on Saturday morning with an opening round 85 but recovered and carded a 77 in the afternoon session and a 2-over par 74 in the final round and finished in a tie for 29th place. Sophomore Samantha Sommers, playing the tournament as an individual, finished in a tie for 36th, followed by Michele Edlin in a tie for 54th, Mary Narzisi in 70th and Kelli Berns in 76th.
Purdue, the defending Big Ten Champions, won the event by 17 strokes over Michigan State with a score of 895. Notre Dame finished third, followed by Indiana and Michigan in fourth and fifth, respectively. Individually, the Boilermaker’s Maria Hernadez took home medalist honors with a four stroke victory over Laura Kueny of Michigan State.
The Gophers conclude the 2008 fall season on Oct. 27-29 at the Las Vegas Invitational. The invitational can be followed live at www.golfstat.com.
