Golden Gophers Out and About in Preseason
10/2/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
With just two weeks remaining before the Minnesota women’s basketball team takes to the hardwood for their first practice of the 2008-09 season, the Golden Gophers and their Fast Break Club enjoyed an evening of shared anticipation at the annual Tip-Off Dinner.
The Gophers entered the room to a round of applause as some of their most faithful boosters gathered to get a first glimpse of this season’s team. With the Gophers’ radio team of Corbu Stathes and Lynnette Sjoquust emceeing the event, the crowd first heard from head coach Pam Borton on the prospects of the upcoming season.
“I’m so excited to get things going for real in a few weeks,” Borton said. “This team has worked extremely hard over the summer and in our pre-season workouts and it’s going to fun to see what they can do. Our captains, Brittany McCoy, Ashley Ellis-Milan and Emily Fox have done a fabulous job of leading this team. We have something special in our team this season.”
A special part of the Tip-Off Dinner each year is when each player is interviewed by Sjoquist in a entertaining “getting to know you” session.

The first semester of the school year is a month old and the Gophers have been very busy with much more than their class schedules and pre-season workouts. Last Saturday, the Gophers took part in the Urban Ventures Clinic for underprivileged youth in Minneapolis. The clinic was held at the Colin Powell Leadership Center.

Community service is a very important element of being a student-athlete at the University of Minnesota. For the last three years the Gopher women’s basketball program has taken part in the annual Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota walk.

And we certainly can’t forget about basketball. The Gophers will host their annual Hoopla celebration on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 12 noon in Williams Arena. Watch for further details coming soon.
