Gopher Men in Fifth at Georgetown Intercollegiate

The last time the University of Minnesota men's golf team visited Washington D.C. it was as guests of President Bush and they were they reigning NCAA Champions. That was six years ago and the Gophers traveling party this week for the Georgetown Intercollegiate only includes a pair of guys that remember the memorable trip, Director of Golf Brad James and Associate Head Coach Andrew Tank. Tank served as captain for the 2002 squad.
This week’s trip is about playing golf and after a combined score of 296 in the opening round of the Georgetown Intercollegiate the Gophers have put themselves in position to once again leave the Nation’s Capital as a champion. Miami of Ohio leads after 18 holes with a 3-over par 287 followed by Richmond at 291 and William & Mary and Campbell University at 295.
Minnesota was led by senior Yu Katayama, who fired a 1-over par 72 and is in a six-way tie for eighth place. Fellow senior Victor Almstrom and junior Ben Pisani both carded 3-over par 74’s and are in a pack of six players that are tied for 21st.
Gopher senior Andy Paulson, playing the tournament as an individual, opened with 4-over par 75 and is in a nine-player logjam for 27th place. Yet another Gopher senior, Patrick Datz, opened with a 76 and is in a tie for 36th place while sophomore Cameron White is tied for 56th place after a 79.
Day one of the tournament was scheduled to include 36-holes but this morning’s frost caused delays and shortened the event to 36 holes. The final round is scheduled for Tuesday morning at The Members Club at Four Streams.
