Gopher Women Conclude Fall Schedule in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS COLLEGIATE SHOWDOWN: Minnesota will head to the desert on Oct. 27-29 for its final event of the fall season, the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. The Vegas Showdown, hosted by UNLV, will take place at the 6,265 yard, par 72 Boulder Creek Golf Club.

The tournament field includes BYU, Colorado State, Eastern Washington, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa State, Long Beach State, Louisville, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, UC Davis, UNLV and Washington. Oklahoma State (5) is the highest ranking team in the tournament according to the most recent Golfweek rankings. Louisville (16) and Pepperdine (18) are the only other teams in the top-20. The Gophers are 64th in the country according to the rankings.

The 18-team field will participate in a 54-hole invitational playing in threesomes, the teams will play 18 holes each day in a shotgun format starting at 9:30 a.m. Central. Pairings for the final 18 holes on Wednesday will be determined by scores. Wednesday’s shotgun start is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. The low four individual scores will determine the team score for each round. the entire tournament can be followed live at www.golfstat.com.

LADY NORTHERN RECAP: The University of Minnesota women’s golf team knew they needed a good day on the links to make a move in the final round of the 2008 Lady Northern at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. They started the day in a tie for 12th place but put together their best score of the 54-hole event with a 303 to move up five spots and finish in seventh with a combined score of 941.

After opening the event with a round of 328, the Gophers rebounded with a 310 in the afternoon session and bettered that on Sunday with the aforementioned 303. Sophomore Teresa Puga continued her consistent play with a 3-over par 75 on Sunday to finish the day where she started, in a tie for fifth place. She has now placed in the top 10 in three of the team’s four tournaments this fall.

Senior Paige Bromen’s weekend was similar to what the Gophers as a team went through. She struggled on Saturday morning with an opening round 85 but recovered and carded a 77 in the afternoon session and a 2-over par 74 in the final round and finished in a tie for 29th place. Sophomore Samantha Sommers, playing the tournament as an individual, finished in a tie for 36th, followed by Michele Edlin in a tie for 54th, Mary Narzisi in 70th and Kelli Berns in 76th.

THE GOPHERS: Minnesota’s lineup for the Las Vegas Showdown will include senior Paige Bromen and sophomores Paige Bromen, Michele Edlin, Mary Narzisi and Teresa Puga. Puga leads the team in the fall season with three top-five finishes and a stroke average of 74.5.

UP NEXT: The Gophers will be off until they open the spring portion of its schedule on Feb. 8-10 at the Puerto Rio Shootout in Rio Mar, P.R. The Gophers will play in five spring events before taking part in the 2009 Big Ten Championships, at the aforementioned Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
