Gophers Shoot 289 in First Round of Vegas Showdown

The current University of Minnesota women’s golf team continues to add to the Gopher record books. Heading into the fall season the Gophers had managed to card a sub-300 round only 11 times since the beginning of the 1997-98 season.
The record of 288 the 1992 squad tallied at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational was in jeopardy today in the first round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Boulder Creek Golf Club and until the final hole, it looked like it was going to be broken. Minnesota ended up finishing the first round with a 1-over par score of 289 and sits in 10th place.
“Our players really played well today and showed the reasons why we as a staff are excited about the future of our program at the University of Minnesota,” said Associate Head Coach Kris Wessinger. “We have a young team that continues to learn from every experience they encounter on the course.”
Senior Paige Bromen established a new career best round by carding a 2-under par 70 to lead the Gophers. She is in a five-way tie for 12th. As did sophomore Michele Edlin, who fired a 1-under par round of 71 and is a nine-way tie for 17th.
Fellow sophomores Teresa Puga, the Gophers leader in stroke average heading into the tournament, and Mary Narzisi shot a 1-over 73 and a 3-over 75, respectively, while another sophomore, Samantha Sommers, carded a 7-over 79.
Unfortunately for Minnesota the round came on a day that saw seven teams finish under par, including Louisville and Pepperdine who are tied for the team lead at 8-under 280. Individually, Lee Lopez of Long Beach State shot an 8-under 64 and holds a three-shot lead over Cindy LaCrosse of Louisville, Pernilla Lindberg of Oklahoma State and Lisa McCloskey of Pepperdine.
