Off to its best start in seven years, the University of Minnesota men’s hockey team picked up first-place votes and climbed to fifth in both national polls.
The Gophers moved up one spot in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll and jumped two positions in the U.S. College Hockey Online/CBS College Sports rankings. Minnesota gained two first place votes in the USCHO/CBS Sports poll and one top ranking from USA Today/USA Hockey poll.
The Gophers are 3-0-1 after sweeping St. Cloud State and picking up a win and a tie at Wisconsin. It is Minnesota’s best record after four games since winning its first games during the 2001-02 season.
Minnesota was ranked fifth at one point of the 2007-08 season, coming prior to the second week of the year. The Gophers were ranked ninth in this year’s preseason polls.
Minnesota’s next opponent, Minnesota State, is ranked 11th by USCHO/CBS Sports and 12th in the USA Today/USA Hockey poll. The Gophers and Mavericks meet Friday at 7 p.m. at Mariucci Arena and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Xcel Energy Center in the second game of the Minnesota College Hockey Showcase.
